Aspinwall VFD

Member Spotlight - Nick Scheid Jr.From time to time, we are going to recognize some of our volunteer firefighters, who are doing good work as a volunteer firefighter for the Aspinwall VFD. Today, we highlight one of our most active members, Nick Scheid Jr. If you didn’t know this already, our volunteer firefighters come to us from all walks of life. Nick graduated from the University of Pittsburgh, with an Engineering Degree. Nick has been a member in our department since 1965. He is currently the President of our department and actively serves on many of our committees. He is also the Treasurer of our Relief Association. Nick has served in every line officer position for us, from 2nd Lieutenant to Fire Chief. He was Chief of our department from 1990-1995. Prior to his career retirement, Nick worked for Westinghouse, working in their Atomic Fuels Division. He then moved on and spent 39 years working as a Maintenance Engineer at Valspar, leading their maintenance crews. While with Valspar, Nick traveled to South Africa, South America, England, Mexico and American Samoa setting up systems and troubleshooting engineering problems for Valspar’s customers. Nick was also Valspar’s Fire Chief for 15 years, in their Fire Brigade. Nick’s great engineering background helps him serve as a great mentor to the younger members of our department. Nick has been awarded a number of times with our department’s “Art Esser” award for going above and beyond with his work in our department. He was also awarded a Distinguished Service Medal, and a Service Recognition Award for his 50+ years of active volunteer service with our department. His dedication to our department is simply incredible. When Nick is not at the fire station, he can be found at home with his wife, Ginny. He is very active in his neighborhood, helping his neighbors with snow removal or grass cutting. In addition to volunteering for our fire department, he also volunteers as a member of Aspinwall’s Planning Commission. He has been serving on the Planning Commission for the past 40 years. Nick is a great example as a member of our volunteer department, as a husband, a father, a grandfather and as a member of our community. Nick receives a great amount of respect when he is at the firehouse and deservedly so. We wish Nick the very best going forward and we thank him for his many years of service. If you would like to join Nick and become a member of the Aspinwall Volunteer Fire Department, stop by on any Tuesday evening and you can learn how. ... See MoreSee Less
